The award-winning artists of this year’s Reflections Art Exhibit: The African American Experience Through the Eyes of the Black Artist boldly proclaim, “We Have a Story to Tell.” And indeed—we do.

1st Place: “Beautiful Pieces” by Rene “Zyra” Neal

Our stories are rich, complex, and powerful. They speak of joy and pain, resistance and resilience, of ancestors who dreamed and descendants who now carry those dreams forward. Each artist featured in this juried exhibit brings their own truth to light. And through their work, we are reminded: art is not just decoration—it is declaration.

What makes Reflections so special is the space it creates for Black artists to be seen and heard on their own terms. Some of the artists are just beginning their creative journeys. Others have been quietly creating for years, without the recognition they deserve. But this exhibit puts them in the spotlight—and rightly so.

Reflections affirms what we’ve always known: our voices matter. Our stories matter. And the world is richer when they are shared.

2nd Place: “Silhouette of a Man” by Verline Johnson

Each piece on display is more than just visual expression—it is a narrative. A reflection of the artist’s spirit. A mirror held up to society. A testament to the truth that we are here, we have always been here, and we are not finished speaking. Because we have a story to tell—and it’s time the world listens.

Let us celebrate these artists and honor their stories. Special thanks to Cape Neurosurgical Associates, whose generous support made

Reflections possible.

Honorable Mention: “Worth Protecting” by Chayll Richardson

Come witness the power of art as a form of storytelling—and hear the voices of a people who continue to create, remember, and rise.
