An Invitation to Add your Voice:Riverfest Community Planning Renewed

Volunteers, event planners, sponsors, and new ideas are needed for historic commemoration

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – Planning has already begun in Cape Girardeau to celebrate community and country on July 4, 2026, the 250th anniversary of our Declaration of Independence. Event organizers are actively seeking supporters to create this once-in-a-lifetime free community event, “Riverfest, A Great American 250 Year Celebration.”

Riverfest was a popular annual event in town from the 1980s through the early 2000s. Riverfest lit up Cape Girardeau’s riverfront with music, food, and fun—a celebration of community rooted in the power and beauty of the Mississippi River. It became a cherished tradition, earning its place in Cape Girardeau’s history.

Event Committee Co-Chairs Jeanne Muckerman and Deb Maevers, in partnership with the Cityof Cape Girardeau, are building the team to honor America’s semi quincentennial milestone in big style. Initial plans envision a grand celebration featuring a parade, festival, commemorative ceremonies, and fireworks—-coordinated with veterans groups, historic properties, and other organizations already planning their special events. The city’s popular “Great American 4th of July” fireworks display, previously held at Arena Park, will move downtown to create a spectacular show over the Mississippi River.

“We’re coming together to celebrate our past, present, and future,” said Muckerman. “This is an opportunity for Cape Girardeau to showcase our community spirit while honoring the historic significance of America’s 250th birthday.”

They are inviting community members to provide input, apply to join the planning committee, and sign up to volunteer for what promises to be a historic celebration. “The City is very grateful for the co-chairs, and everyone who is already stepping up to help make this unique national celebration extra special for the community,” said Mayor Stacy Kinder.

“We are excited to bring back Riverfest, reborn as Cape’s 250th Fourth of July celebration,” said Maevers. “The event will blend patriotic pride with hometown charm. Join us next Independence Day as we honor the past, present, and future while lighting up the riverfront!”
